An odd thing to notice-or I've been home with these kids too long...

It has come to my attention that for some reason when I get out of the shower I inevitably forget to dry my right armpit. Of course I don't think about it until my deodorant stick slips right outta there, obviously leaving nothing behind on my skin, then I have to grab my towel and wipe vigorously and reapply the deodorant (after wiping the water off of it too). And since we are speaking of personal hygiene-we are right? I've also noticed that even though I am right handed I get a closer shave when I use my left hand. Weird huh? Oh, and for those of you who know about my test drive of a new razor, I have decided not to switch after all. It seems I do prefer my tried and true Gillette Good News razor. Mostly because I like the smallness of it. Interestingly enough I've read somewhere that women in particular show marked brand loyalty when it comes to personal hygiene and skin care products and it looks like I am part of that statistic. Nearly every product I use is one I've used since the onset of puberty. Seriously. The only changes I have made are switching to a Sonicare toothbrush and Tom's of Maine deodorant, both health-motivated changes for gum and breast health.

I get the switching toothbrushes for gum health thing. Explain to me the breast health and deodorant relation.

Some studies suggest that the way antiperspirants work (aluminum and parabens in particular) allow for a build up of toxins in the lymph nodes under your arms which are connected to the glands in your breasts. There is no conclusive link but we know who controls the research don't we? Conspiracy theory at work... Seriously though, I have heard of many doctors who have "off the record" told women with a family history of breast cancer to stop using antiperspirants and wearing underwire bras-and talked to a couple myself. Who knows? Since I am not giving up my underwire bras I figured I'd switch to deodorant. I do occasionally use antiperspirants still, cause sometimes you really don't want to look all sweaty. Huh. this should have been a post in ans of itself.

Well...I'm half safe, since I don't wear underwire. :-)

My first deoderant was Tickle. The pink one. It looked kind of disco from my young, easily influenced perspective (and a little bit like a air control tower - I explain only because it was so long ago). Talk about smelling like teen spirit. About a year ago I tried the big salt thing. It worked until it didn't (1pm, on the dot, every day) so, I had to give it up. I would stick with it, though, if there was some reasonable way to wash and start all over again at 1pm. Why am I going on and on about this? It strikes a nerve, Brook. It strikes a nerve!

WV = "munph" (yes!)

I am not one of those product-devoted women. I'm a product whore. I am a one-woman stimulus package!

I think perserverance is the key to the whole deodorant vs. antiperspirant thing. I too love the Toms, but about a month after switching to it, I went through a spell of very damp pits and sometimes Tom's deodorant properties couldn't keep that much dampness from smelling a bit. I would use my old stuff for a day or 2, then switch back to Toms. I think the sweat glands in my pits were clearing out years of stoppage. All is normal now.

Nej that's kinda my thoughts to-from the other half.
Victoria I hear ya! I do in fact remember Tickle, though my first deodorant was Tussy roll on, with that same control tower look. I have found with my switch to deodorant that I do sometimes have to preemptively apply more early in the afternoon. The trick is the preemptive bit. Funny the different things that elicit responses from us all isn't it?
WG when we find what we like there's no point in changing is there? Takes way to long to find the good stuff the first time around!
Mom! There you are! Yeah, it can take a while for things to level out. Change manages to wreak havoc but it mostly gets better-no matter what the change is. I love you!

Brook I do exactly like you for the deodorant and exactly for the same reason - except that in France doctors don't talk about this 'off the record'... just something to keep in mind.

and I want to add, my American doctor "didn't know" the relationship between birth control pill with estrogens and higher levels of triglycerides and cholesterol... sigh.

DCN-Like I said, we know who controls the research and media here in the states...It bugs the shit out of me that no one really thinks anymore. There are no inquiring minds outside of "People" or "OK" or whatever the gossip rags are these days. I quit take bc pills a long time ago because I didn't feel the risk/benefit ratio was worth it. Of course I didn't mind having kids either, and was armed with ...KNOWLEDGE!

But me likes ALL the pretties! That's the problem. Le sigh.

WG-I have such a hard time picking one thing I am sure I would fall under some spell and take them all if I ever did find the one thing. right now I think I need...face cream. the kind that some how some way magically zaps 15 years off. Or something like that. =)
